FAQ
Who is the CAL Web team?
The CAL Web team is composed of high school juniors and seniors who attend CAL every other day. Students come from several local school districts in the east county area.
What does the CAL Web team do?
The CAL web team works with local small business and nonprofit groups to develop new web sites and improve old web sites.
How does that work?
Once we've made contact with a client and decided that we are a good match and would like to work together, a group of students (usually 3-5) is assigned to work with the client. One student acts as the project director and is responsible for all communication with the client. The students will set up meetings with the client as necessary throughout the working relationship to solicit client feedback on the design process.
How much does it cost?
We don't charge for our service. The only cost involved is usually any fees associated with registering a domain name and providing web site hosting. Clients have the opportunity to make a tax deductible donation to CAL to support academic programs if they want to, but it is not required.
Will you give me an idea of these fees in advance?
Yes, part of the web team job is to give the client a list of any fees that will be necessary to get the web site developed.
OK, what services will you provide?
We will help you to pick one of our packages that best suits your needs and time constraints. We will work with you to design and build a web site that meets your needs. We will register the domain name and upload your site to an Internet service provider. This is basically a turnkey operation. We will provide free updates to your web site for a period of 1 year. We will also train someone on your staff to update the web site after our 1 year update period is over. We also will offer free technical support on anything that we build.
I want a really professional looking site. Can high school students really do that?
Absolutely, we will make every effort to make sure you are completely satisfied with your web site. CAL students have a wide variety of experience in web design. We are able to put together teams of students with combined experience in many of today's cutting edge web design tools.
Are there limits to what you can do?
Yes there are. Our students are apprentice web designers. We are essentially limited to the skills that we have in house. We are working all the time to broaden our skills and keep up with the latest trends in web design. Once we have an idea of what you need, we'll give you an assessment of whether or not we can meet all your needs.
Is there a waiting list for CAL web clients?
Typically we have a few clients waiting at the beginning of the school year. We generally fill up fast and are usually booked up for the year by Christmas time. Check in with us however because we sometimes can squeeze in a project if someone else cancels or if we free up some time.
This sounds great! How do I know if my organization is a good fit for the CAL Web team?
Contact us. We'll evaluate your needs and if we have an opening and we think we can help we'll organize a team and get the ball rolling.
I have more questions, who do I contact?
Cane Prevost, Web Design Instructor, The Center for Advanced Learning.
