Design

Everyone is a designer. Whether you are choosing a color for your house or a room, or buying clothes or customizing an automobile, the choices you make are design decisions.

Design is finding the best solution to a problem within the limitations of the problem (needs, costs, time). Often more than a single solution exists for each problem. It is the designers job to find the best one.

Design is necessary because:
  • Design is an instrument of organization, a medium for presuasion, and a means of relating objects to people, and an method for improving safety and efficiency.
  • Design is an urgent requirement, not a cosmetic addition. Design is essential to survival.
  • Design can save time by presenting information more clearly.
  • Design enhances communication. It helps more people to understand a given message. Design helps accelerate learning.

Graphic Designers communicate and express themselves if 4 distinct ways:
Typography, symbolism, illustration, and photography/film.

You will complete a variety of projects that demonstrate your understanding of the design process, elements, and principles. You will use freehand sketches, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign to complete the assignments.
