Credit by Proficiency

What is credit by proficiency?

Using a new Oregon Department of Education administrative rule, (OAR 581-022-1131, Credit Options for Students) CAL is now able to offer students academic credit for things that they do outside of the traditional classroom.

What kind of things can students do to obtain this credit?

Students can have a variety of different experiences. They can do an internship. They can do community service or volunteer with a nonprofit. They can plan a project. They can design a unique educational experience. They may even be able to use work experience from their current job. The idea is to find something they are already interested in or something that they are already doing that has educational value and relevance to the student.

Are there any requirements for the student projects?

Yes, the projects must have academic rigor. They must allow the students to pursue new learning. The projects must be mapped to state standards (CIM/CAM, PASS, or Career Related Learning Standards). Students may not choose projects that they are already getting academic credit for in their other classes.

Who decides on the projects?

The students decide what they want to do in conjunction with their CAL Academic Advisor. The goal is to find something that has meaning to the student and allows them to pursue areas of interest.

If there is no seat time in the classroom how do you know if the student is making progress?

There are several ways that this is accomplished. Students document their work in a variety of ways. It could be a web log, a video, a diary, a set of pictures etc. They are also required to have frequent scheduled contact with their academic advisor.

Are the projects scored or graded in any way?

Yes, students are required to give a presentation at the conclusion of their experience. Their presentation will include evidence of their experience, evidence of meeting state standards, and evidence of new learning. The presentations will be scored by a team of CAL staff and possibly members of the local community.

Is there a minimum number of hours students need to put in on a project?

There is no requirement for number of hours. However, the project needs to be significant and have some rigor. This will be worked out in the student's initial proposal.
