Junior English is designed to give students practical reading and writing skills that they will need in the workforce and in technical/professional training programs.   In writing, students study paragraph development, sentence structure, and punctuation.   They apply these skills as they organize and develop their ideas in such documents as resumes, letters, memos, reports, instructions, proposals, and personal reflections.   In reading, students learn strategies to build vocabulary and comprehend meaning from a variety of texts, including textbooks, poetry, short stories, essays, and novels.

Senior Year

Advanced Manufacturing Processes Lab (Full Year 2 periods )

In this two-period block lab, students work in teams to complete advanced manufacturing projects for local industries. Students learn problem-solving processes and project management as they conceptualize, design, manufacture, test, and evaluate a product prototype.

Computer-Assisted Manufacturing and Drawing (Full Year)

This course focuses on the design component of the product development process, using CAM and CAD on college-level projects. Students have access to industry experts as they use manufacturing technologies to create and test product prototypes.

Junior Year

Health Science Exploration (Full Year)

Working positively and professionally with co-workers, patients, and other health providers is a key to success in the health care professions.   In this course, which includes instruction from medical/dental professionals, and simulations of typical medical/dental situations, students explore ethical and legal issues that affect communications within a variety of health care systems, as well as learn skills for managing their own work, leading others, solving problems, and working effectively within a team.   Students will receive CPR/First Aid certification.

Medical Terminology (Full Year)

Through classroom instruction and activities students in this course learn how to analyze, define, build, and use common medical/dental terminology.   Students will learn terminology through the exploration of body systems, field trips, classroom projects.

Clinical Lab Practice (Full Year)

Research and practice come together in this course that prepares Health Science Medical/Dental students for the CAL capstone project.  Through simulated experiences at CAL, students acquire the personal qualities, knowledge, and skills needed to make their clinical experience successful.  Students are also exposed to a variety of health issues, trends, and regulations to enhance their exposure to health sciences.

Clinical Experience (Full Year)

Through this course, Senior Health Science Medical/Dental students work in various medical/dental settings in order to experience health care in real life setting.   Clinical rotations, job shadows, and internships may include work in emergency rooms, hospitals, medical and dental offices, etc.   Students may use this as part of their senior capstone project.

Anatomy and Physiology (Full Year)

Students in this college-level science course are introduced to all the components of the human body, including cell structure and function, tissues and membranes, and the tem major body systems.   Elements of advanced biology and chemistry courses, as they apply to a study of the human body, are included, and lab experiences provide opportunities for students to explore reading and lecture topics in greater depth.   This course emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning through labs and field trips.

Junior Year

Introduction to Information Technology (Full year)

This course is designed to introduce the students to the field of Information Technology.   The students will rotate every twelve weeks between the following three areas of study: Computer Architecture, Network Systems, and Computer Operating Systems.     

CISCO I (Full Year)

This course encompasses the first two semesters of the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) course work. Instruction will blend web based information and hands on activities to develop an understanding of open system interconnections, network topology, internet protocol addressing, network components, basic networking and beginning router configurations.   Students may earn Mt. Hood Community College credit upon successful completion of the course.

                                                                       

 

Introduction to Compter Programming (Full Year)

Students will utilize the Java languages to gain a solid foundation in computer programming.   Students will study computing constructs, concrete and abstract data structures, algorithms, algorithm analysis, and object oriented concepts.   This class targets material found in the AP Computer Science AB exam.   A solid score on this exam gives the student college credit in most computer science college programs.

CISCO II (Full Year)

This course is a continuation of Cisco Networking I, covering semesters 3 and 4 of the CCNA course work.   Instruction will blend web based information and hands on activities to develop an understanding of advanced router configurations, LANs (switch theory, VLANS, switching design), WAN protocols (PPP, Frame Relay, ISDN, ASDL, Cable), WAN design and network trouble shooting.   Students may earn Mt. Hood Community College credit upon successful completion of the course.   Students will be prepared to take the CCNA exam, a network certification exam administered for a fee at several testing centers in the Portland Metropolitan Area.

Client & Network Operating Systems (Full Year)

Thisr course will prepare the students for the Microsoft's Client Operating System core exam.   The students will be installing, configuring, and administering Microsoft Windows and Network Operating Systems.   With additional information, the students have the option of taking a Microsoft certified test and if they pass the exam (fees for the exam are paid by the student), they will have achieve Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status.

Course Descriptions

    Information Technology: Graphic Design

    Students will work with industry standard tools and software to create graphics for clients in the local Gresham Community. The entire curriculum of the program revolves around setting up and running a CAL Design firm where students will interact with clients interested in working with CAL students to solve their design needs.

    This program is for anyone interested in the creative industry. People who study graphic design go on to become web designers, clothing and apparel designers, advertising executives, graphic designers, illustrators, marketing directors, multi media artists, animators, video game designers and a whole host of other careers. No previous experience is necessary to enter this program.

Graphic Design Lab (Full Year 2 periods)

This class is a beginning level class in general design theory. Students will use cutting edge software to explore the elements and principles of design. Students will work with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign to develop solutions to various design problems. Students complete design projects for local small businesses and non-profit agencies creating everything from logos, to newsletters, business cards, pamphlets and brochures, advertisements and other forms of visual communication. Students work in teams and form partnerships with community businesses and organizations. Teamwork and communication skills are stressed.

Introduction to Information Technology (Semester)

This course is designed to introduce the students to the field of Information Technology.   The students will rotate every twelve weeks between the following three areas of study: Computer Architecture, Network Systems, and Programming.   The Computer Architecture provides the foundation for installing, maintaining and documenting a variety of computer technologies.   The students in Network Systems will be introduced the hardware and software systems of a network.   During the Programming rotation, students will be introduced to the basic concepts of problem solving and how to work out verifiable solutions in a structured fashion.

Web Design Tools and Applications (Semester)

This is an entry level web class. Students will learn html programming as well as Cascading Style Sheet technology for the web. They will learn how to upload and maintain websites as they learn to use the Macromedia Web Design Suite. (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Freehand) Students in this class get hands on experience working with clients. Students will work in teams to build websites for local small businesses and non-profit organizations. Teamwork and communication skills are stressed.

Design Lab (Full Year)

This is essentially lab time for students to work on various client projects. Students will work in teams to complete a variety of design solutions for local small businesses and non profit agencies. This class is run as a web design business. Team members carry out all the various duties of professional designers including writing project proposals, creating workflows, scheduling client meetings, and most importantly delivering projects.

Multimedia and interactive Web Design (Full Year)

Students will work on advanced interactive Web Design skills learning how to build more dynamic and interactive web sites using Flash, Javascript and PHP and MySql programming.

Advanced Design for Web and Print (Full Year)

Students move beyond design basics and learn how to create forward compatible web sites and print ads using the latest technology. Students will learn advanced layout techniques as well as print production Fundamentals of commerce, e-commerce security and marketing will be examined.
